A head-on crash can lead to serious head and neck trauma.

Watch Out for Head-On Collisions

Let’s face it — when it comes down to it, you don’t want to be involved in any kind of car accident.  A car crash is scary, and can result in significant injuries.  The aftermath can leave you in pain, struggling to pay bills, and overwhelmed with stress and anxiety.

One type of car accident can be particularly dangerous, however.  Head-on collisions — where the front ends of two cars slam into each other — tend to result in more significant injuries and even deaths than other types of car accidents.

When two cars hit each other head-on, the physics behind the accident can lead to far greater injuries than other types of collisions.  That is because each car is moving forward in opposing directions when they hit each other. In many cases, the cars are driving at high rates of speed. The drivers and passengers can be thrown forward, either out of their seats, or against their seat belts before being slammed back against their seats.  If the force of the crash is strong enough — if the drivers are going at a high enough rate of speed — the driver may hit the steering wheel or another object in the car.

Head-on collisions often happen when drivers go the wrong way down a street, road or highway.  This may happen by accident, such as if a person is simply unfamiliar with local roads and makes a wrong turn down a one-way street or does not realize that he is turning down the wrong side of an expressway.  It can also happen in cases where a driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Far too often, it is impossible for a driver to avoid a head-on collision with another. But sometimes, drivers are able to avoid head-on collisions by being extra alert and aware of their surroundings.  If you are traveling on roads that you are familiar with, continue to pay close attention to the road around you.  If you see headlights on the road ahead of you, pull over to the side of the road.  You may have to swerve off the road to avoid a head-on collision, which may be safer than the crash with another car.
