These 11 cars have not been involved in any fatal accidents.

New Report Identifies the Safest Cars on the Road

We all want to be safe on the road. But how can we really know which cars are the safest to drive? A new report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has one potential answer, with its list of the 11 cars and SUVs that they claim are the safest on the road.

The IIHS drafted its report using data from the federal government regarding fatalities in car accidents between 2012 to 2015. According to the IIHS, there were 11 cars and SUVs in this time period in which not a single person died in four years. These cars include:

  • Audi Q7 SUV
  • Volkswagen (VLKAF) Tiguan two-wheel-drive SUV
  • Toyota Tacoma Double Cab long bed four-wheel-drive pickup
  • Mazda CX-9 two-wheel-drive SUV
  • Audi A6 all-wheel-drive
  • Jeep Cherokee all-wheel-drive SUV
  • BMW 535 i and is
  • BMW 535xi
  • Lexus RX 350 two-wheel-drive SUV
  • Lexus CT 200h
  • Mercedes-Benz M-class SUV (called GLE-class in its current version)

Most of the cars on this list are SUVs, which isn’t surprising. After all, if two automobiles are in a crash, the bigger vehicle is likely to sustain less damage in the collision — and its occupants are likely to be safer. The cars with the highest death rates are very small cars. This includes the Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio and the Toyota Scion tC.

Notably, many of the cars on the list are also expensive luxury vehicles. Most Americans cannot afford these pricey vehicles, which may leave them wondering how they can be safe on the road if they cannot buy an Audi, Mercedes, Lexus, or BMW. While these cars may be highly rated according to the IIHS report, this is not the only factor that accounts for safety on the road.

As car accident lawyers, we know that the most important factor in staying safe on the road is not necessarily the type of car you drive, but whether you are paying full attention to your driving, and whether you are driving defensively. Putting away all electronic devices, leaving plenty of time to get to your destination, and minimizing other distractions can help make sure you get to your destination safely. Being a smart defensive driver can also help to prevent accidents. This includes leaving plenty of room between your car and the vehicle in front of you, scanning your surroundings to watch for possible dangers, and being alert for other drivers and hazards on the road. While the IIHS report is a helpful tool for drivers searching for a new car, it is certainly not the only factor that should be considered.
