Over 30 million McDonald’s wristbands are being recalled due to risks of skin irritation, burns, and blisters after more than 70 reports of instances were reported following the wear of the ‘Step-It’ activity wristband.  The wristbands that come with the Happy Meals were part of the company’s plan to help promote a healthier lifestyle among children.

The “Step It” fitness tracker came in six colors and strapped on like a watch. The device counted steps or blinked according to how quickly or slowly the person wearing the device was moving. McDonald’s released a statement regarding the recall, stating “nothing is more important to us than the safety and well-being of our customers which is why upon learning about concerns with these bands we acted swiftly to stop distribution of these products.”

While the company states on their website that the activity bands were tested and in compliance with federal and state requirements, prior to the recall, a mother in Arkansas wrote on Facebook that her child was burned within minutes of playing with the wristband.  Parents and other consumers are advised to return the fitness trackers immediately to any McDonald’s for a free replacement toy and yogurt or apple slices.
