After state and federal regulators found Volkswagen guilty of cheating on their emissions tests with their 2.0 –liter diesel vehicles, the automaker has agreed to pay up to $14.7 billion in a proposed settlement. Roughly 85,000 vehicles were recalled, and owners now have the option to either sell back their vehicle to VW or agree to have the problem fixed.

Are you eligible? If you leased, owned or currently own a VW or Audi 2.0-liter diesel vehicle from model years 2009-2015, you could be eligible. The models being recalled include:

  • VW Beetle (years 2013-2015)
  • VW Golf (years 2010-2015)
  • VW Jetta (years 2009-2015)
  • VW Passat (years 2012-2015)
  • Audi A3 (years 2010-2013, 2015)

Also, if you were the former owner or leased any of the above vehicles on or before September 18th of last year, you too could be eligible.

How much can you get?

Only owners will receive at least $5,100 in cash payment, according to the LA times. But the amount you receive will depend on when the car was purchased. A buyback or early lease termination option will also be available in the proposed settlement. If you don’t want to sell back your car, VW will give you the option to have your vehicle fixed.

If the settlement is approved, a notice will be sent out to owners and former owners with specific terms of the settlement.
