A federal judge in San Francisco has provided details regarding an agreement that could affect the owners of around 482,000 Volkswagen diesel cars that were found to be cheating on emissions tests. Owners will have the option to sell their diesel vehicles back to Volkswagen or have them repaired. The agreement is only for 2-liter, four-cylinder engines, mostly Jetta, Golf, and Passat models.

The potential agreement still has many unknown factors and nothing has been determined as of yet. Some of the things that they are deciding on are; the details of how much Volkswagen would pay for a diesel vehicle buyback, if there will be compensation for potential reduced gas mileage, and when the agreement would begin to take effect.

Many people were shocked at the revelation last September when it was discovered that Volkswagen had been cheating on emission tests. Marketed as ‘clean diesel’, the affected vehicles were actually emitting up to 40 times as many pollutants as allowed by the Environment Protection Agency. Volkswagen had installed software in the vehicles to reduce the emissions only when the vehicle was being tested (using data from the steering wheel, speed, and duration of the engine’s operation).

Owners of affected Volkswagen vehicles will get to comment before any agreement is finalized.
