A pregnant woman in Northern California was killed by her pet pit bull in a tragedy that has once again put the spotlight on breed safety.

On lists of “most dangerous dog breeds”, pit bulls generally rank at or near the top. Pit bull maulings tend to make the news often, but this recent story is particularly heartbreaking. It’s unknown what caused the pit bull to suddenly attack the victim. The victim was discovered by her husband, with the dog standing over the body. He was able to remove the dog from the scene, but the pit bull escaped during the police investigation. When the dog was found, it attacked police officers, who were forced to shoot the charging animal, killing it.

While most dog attacks can seemingly be prevented through proper training and socialization techniques, it appears the pit bull involved in this attack had previously exhibited no signs of being dangerous. Dog owners of all breeds should take the time to learn proper dog bite prevention. The unexpected can happen at any time.
