As many as 10,000 campers at Yosemite National Park may have been exposed to a deadly hantavirus, with at least six people having contracted the mouse-borne illness. Hantaviruses have no cure. Exhibiting flu-like symptoms, people who contract a hantavirus can incubate the disease for weeks, culminating in respiratory failure and organ failure. Current statistics state that more than 1 in 3 people who contract the disease will die from it.
Delaware North Co., the concessionaire at Yosemite, has sent letters to about 3,000 people who stayed in the Signature Cabins between June and August. Signature Cabins are a high-end accommodation in Yosemite’s historic Curry Village. These cabins have since been shut down and disinfected, but the design of the Signature Cabins make the conditions necessary for mice who may harbor the hantavirus to thrive.
