According to the State Parks staff, they received a report about the crash involving a recreational off-highway vehicle near sand highway 22.
Upon arrival, rangers found the side-by-side vehicle at the bottom of a “large bowl.” Reportedly, it had significant damage to its roll cage.
At that moment, bystanders were giving CPR to Taylor Brard.
Rangers immediately began life-saving efforts. They continued until CAL FIRE personnel arrived. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, they pronounced Taylor Brard dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, a helicopter transported the injured passenger to the hospital. Thankfully, the injuries were not life-threatening.
State Parks confirmed no other vehicles were part of the incident. They also noted that the last OHV-related death at the dunes happened in June of 2021.
