As part of a continuing effort to promote motorcycle safety, the city of Santa Monica’s police department is holding their 2nd annual motorcycle safety enforcement operation this weekend. The SMPD hopes that by offering awareness, it will help reduce the amount of motorcycle related deaths and injuries due to accident collisions.

In 2012, 4,957 motorcyclists were killed in motor vehicle related accidents, which was a 7% increase from the 4,630 motorcyclists killed in 2011 (NHTSA).

During the safety enforcement operation, on-duty officers will be patrolling areas that have been known to cause the most motorcycle related accidents. These officers will be on the lookout for traffic safety violations by both motorcyclists and automobile drivers.

Automobile drivers are not the only ones who need to be cautious and aware of motorcyclists on the road. Riders need to be cautious and aware as well to minimize their risk of being involved in an accident.

Some important safety reminders include:

  • Always wear a helmet and/or other protective gear
  • Watch your speed- it is the #1 cause of an accident or fatality
  • Always assume that drivers do not see you
  • Do not ride under the influence of drugs of alcohol
  • Stay away from a driver’s blind spot
