According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, General Motors placed an order for 500,000 ignition switches about two months before notifying federal authorities about the safety issues. The discovery was found in an email exchange between a contractor and Delphi Automotive, the supplier for GMs ignition switches.

The urgent order for 500,000 replacement parts was placed a day after senior executives met in December 2013. The recall for 2.6 million vehicles over faulty ignition switches was announced in February of 2014.
