GlaxoSmithKline is pleading guilty to three criminal charges stemming from its marketing practices of antidepressants Paxil and Wellbutrin and failure to provide safety information about diabetes drug Avandia. According to the federal government, this is the largest settlement of health fraud charges in United States history. The settlement is an astounding $3 billion.

$1 billion is to pay criminal fines and $2 billion is to settle civil fraud claims. Paxil was advertised as being safe and effective for treating depression in teenagers without Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. Glaxo also advertised Wellbutrin for off-label uses such as the treatment of ADHD and obesity, which according to the government Glaxo salespersons called “the happy, horny, skinny pill”.
