If you are like many people who live in Southern California, you ride your bike on a regular basis. While you may have had friends who’ve been injured in bike accidents, or perhaps you have had an injury of your own, you may not realize just how many accidents they are. Read on to learn more about how serious and common these accidents can be and then stick around to find out more about Long Beach’s bike lanes.

More than 100 people die in bike accidents each year in California alone

Would you be surprised to learn that in the state of California, there are more than 100 fatal bike accidents each year? Then of course there are thousands of others who are injured in bike accidents. Some of these accidents are caused by bike riders not behaving safely while others are the result of mistakes made by the motorist or the motorist’s lack of attention. This is why North Long Beach is building parking-protected bike lines that result in a barrier between traffic and bike lanes.

The location of the bike lanes

These new lanes are going to run along Artesia Boulevard to Atlantic Avenue and Orange Avenue. Cyclists can ride in the bike lanes and have the protection of the parking lane between them and traffic. There will be green markings on the pavement so that the change in road design will be highlighted. For example, bike riders need to be aware of upcoming intersections and areas in which vehicles can cross into the bike lane.

The mayor hopes that the additional bike lane safety will lead to more people using bikes

The mayor is on record stating that he believes that the safer bike lanes may lead to more people taking advantage of the already-expansive bike network in Long Beach. In fact, though there are already 139 miles of bike lanes in the city, he is hoping to add another 100 miles. This could give bike riders the ability not just to bike for fun but potentially to make it easier for students and professionals to bike to work.
