After millions of recalls and the deaths of at least 32 infants and toddlers, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission unanimously voted to outlaw the manufacturing, sale, and resale of drop-side cribs. Drop-side cribs have a sliding rail that moved up and down, allowing parents easier access to pick their children up from the crib. However, the risks of injury and death to a child is much greater than the benefits, leading to the product ban. Poor manufacturing and cheap materials would sometimes cause the drop-side railing to detach from the crib, leading to a gap between the mattress and the rail. Infants and toddlers could become stuck in that gap, leading to suffocation.

Starting next June, all cribs will be required to have fixed, non-moving sides. Businesses and nurseries that use drop-side cribs will have one year to replace them with the new, safer cribs. Cribs will undergo much tougher safety testing, making sure that the crib can handle the stresses an older toddler may put on it.

There are still numerous recalls of drop-side cribs active. The Law Offices of Larry H.
