A Los Angeles Times investigation has again put the spotlight on Purdue Pharma, makers of controversial painkiller OxyContin®. The report details the lengths the pharmaceutical company went to market the drug as a 12-hour pain relief solution, even when most patients reported a much shorter efficacy period. Lawsuits accusing Purdue of exaggerating the duration of OxyContin were first filed in the early 2000s. Studies published at that time showed that 7 out of 8 people reported the drug lasted less than 8 hours.

The Times examined public records and confidential documents pertaining to OxyContin. Some of their findings were alarming. Among them, Purdue obtained FDA approval for the drug’s 12-hour relief claims by cherry-picking data, Purdue pushed sales representatives and doctors to recommend higher dosages of Oxycontin despite the risk of addiction and overdose, and over half of patients taking OxyContin are prescribed doses considered dangerous.

The LA Times article can be found here. It is a lengthy article, but it provides helpful information about the drug and what to look out for.
