Losing that hour of sleep can do more than make everyone just a little tired for a week. Turns out that daylight savings can cause an increased risk of injury. There’s a 17% increase in car crash fatalities the Monday after we spring forward and workplace accidents are increased 5.7%.

Be sure to take some extra cautions on the road and in the workplace this week. Two separate studies estimated that the spring forward results in about 40 minutes less sleep. A lack of sleep can cause attention levels to drop, posing a car accident risk and risk of worker injury. By comparison, accident rates do not increase when we fall back to Standard time and gain an hour of sleep.
