A new preventative initiative from the California Highway Patrol, called the Reducing Impaired Driving II (RID II) campaign, is targeted at preventing driving under the influence. The goal of RID II is simple: save lives.

According to CHP’s records, in 2013, 645 people were killed in DUI incidents and more than 10,000 people injured. CHP believes that every single DUI incident is preventable with simple solutions:

  • Designated a sober driver
  • Use public transit
  • Call a cab
  • Get an Uber or Lyft
  • Stay the night

CHP will be leading the RID II campaign by conducting safety presentations, performing saturation patrols, and using DUI checkpoints throughout California. In addition to catching more drivers under the influence, the increased presence police presence is designed to reinforce public awareness about the dangers and costs of a DUI crash or arrest. The RID II campaign is scheduled to be a year-long program.
