Is your car safe? At least 45 million vehicles licensed to operate on U.S. roads suffer from un-repaired safety problems, NBC News reports.  Most of these problems are subject to an outstanding recall. A recent study was conducted by J.D. Power and Associates showing an increase in safety-related recalls such as, improperly inflated tires to airbags that can over inflate in an accident.

Recent recalls such as the Takata Airbags crisis or GM’s faulty ignition switch have researchers questioning if even the minor fixes should require a recall. For example, Honda is one of many automakers who have had to replace the door stickers found on every new vehicle that lists the tire inflation rates.

At first glance it may seem like a minor problem, however the bigger issue at hand is ensuring motorists are aware and get the problem fixed. Clarence Ditlow, the director of the Center of Auto Safety states that, “improperly inflated tires contributed to crashes that killed hundreds of people riding in Ford Explorer SUVs at the beginning of the new millennium.”

While the number or recalls continue to grow, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has implemented a policy on safety problems to help prevent future recall scandals. The NHTSA now requires all manufacturers to make it easy for owners to check if their vehicles are subject to an outstanding recall. You’ll find that information on their public websites, as well as the government’s own SaferCars.gov. You’ll just need the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to look up any recalls. Your VIN can be found on your registration or on a tag at the base of the windshield.
