Car Accident in Chula Vista: Teen, 67-Year-Old Woman Fatal

A car accident in Chula Vista killed two drivers on southbound Interstate 5, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Reportedly, multiple witnesses called the CHP to report a wrong-way driver speeding on southbound I-5 near Camino de la Plaza around 3 a.m.

Then, roughly three minutes after the first emergency call, a head-on collision occurred.

The CHP identified the wrong-way Honda Civic driver as a 67-year-old woman from San Diego. She collided with a Dodge Challenger, driven by a 16-year-old from Imperial Beach.

As a result, the Dodge caught fire and was engulfed in flames. Sadly, both drivers were trapped and pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, the identities of the woman and the teenager are withheld until their families are notified.

For now, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office is awaiting a toxicology report to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

Following the incident, authorities closed all lanes of southbound I-5 north of J Street for an extended period for the investigation, which continued into Wednesday.

Currently, it remains unclear where the driver entered the freeway or whether the exit had preventative tools.

Finally, the CHP encourages anyone with information about this car accident in Chula Vista to call the San Diego office at (858) 293-6000.
