The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a safety alert for the product Best Bentonite Clay, manufactured by Best Bentonite, advising that consumers should stop using the product due to high levels of lead. Specifically, the FDA advises that anyone who purchased this product that may have given it to a child should immediately talk to a doctor.

Best Bentonite Clay, previously found on Amazon and the company’s website, is advertised as a healing clay for deep pore cleansing, acne, anti-aging, and detoxification. It is supposed to be used for all manners of skin application, including application to the face, hair, skin, feet, and also for use in baths. It is sold as a powder and mixed with water for application.

The FDA has not received any adverse event reports of lead poisoning, but are advising consumer and healthcare professionals to report any incidents of lead poisoning to them. Lead poisoning in children is associated with delayed development, cognitive impairment, low intelligence, behavior problems, and more. It is also associated with damage to the central nervous system, immune system, and kidneys.
