As a lawyer for nearly 30 years, Mr. Philips enjoys a uniquely successful litigation career marked by meaningful results for his clients.

In mid-1990s, he represented 600 families against a utility giant, contributing to a +$300M resolution. The case was retold as the 2000 feature film “Erin Brockovich.” In 2004, Mr. Philips’ successful representation of a celebrity client against Hollywood icon Zsa Zsa Gabor garnered international media attention.

In 2013, he sued Nike, Inc. and Apple Inc. regarding the Nike+ FuelBand, about which the corporations had misled the public, and resolved the case for a class of +1M U.S. consumers. Thereafter in 2013, Mr. Philips successfully represented the family of legendary musician Marvin Gaye in a famous federal action, with the 2015 verdict of $7.4M being the largest music copyright verdict in history.

In 2015, Mr. Philips successfully defended a national fertility clinic alongside actress Sophia Vergara in a case concerning complicated legal issues regarding cryogenically-preserved embryos. Mr. Philips’ work with Ms. Vergara caused the opponent to dismiss his lawsuit.

In 2016, Mr. Philips worked to pass California’s AB1542 (now Penal Code section 667.95 and known as “Jordan’s Law”), a first-in-the-nation law aimed at deterring children from committing social media-motivated felonies. A year later, Mr. Philips took on the world’s largest talent agency in a landmark action alleging sexual battery and gender violence upon an actress. The case resulted in heavy media coverage, and marked a turning point in the recognition of Hollywood’s sexual harassment culture.

In 2022, Mr. Philips successfully represented fitness celebrity Jillian Michaels in a malpractice action against one of the world’s largest law firms.

In 2025, Mr. Philips recovered $2.3M at trial for a client who had rear ended another driver on the freeway, convincing a jury that the rear-end accident was the other driver’s fault.

In his spare time, Mr. Philips is happily busy with his family as a music, basketball, and football fan, hopeful amateur drummer, and jiu-jitsu practitioner.
