A bus full of children and counselors on the way to Camp Kee Tov summer camp rear-ended a van on Interstate 80 in Berkeley, injuring at least 18 people on the morning of Monday, August 10th. At least 12 of the victims were children. The bus was traveling to Middle Harbor Park in Oakland on a field trip.

According to authorities, the crash occurred at 10:00 a.m. on the west I-80 near Ashby Avenue. 50 children were on board a yellow school bus when it slammed into a Nissan van, ultimately causing a chain-reaction crash involving six vehicles. At least 12 children were treated for minor injuries, including several bloody noses. Some of the children were taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Four adults on the bus were taken to Alta Bates hospital, including one counselor who struck the windshield during the crash. The drivers of at least two other vehicles were also treated for injuries.

Interstate 80 experienced lane closures for several hours for investigation and cleanup. It is currently unknown how the crash occurred.
