The Details of the Accident

Allegedly, a street racer lost control of the classic Mustang they were driving. They then hit an SUV and the Mustang was cut clear in half. Both of the drivers in the accident went to the hospital with serious injuries, according to the statement of authorities. This happened on Saturday, April 4, 2020 just after 1 PM.

The accident took place in Monrovia, just south of Duarte Road and in the 1900 block of South Myrtle Avenue. According to police, there is a witness who has said she saw two vehicles racing south on Myrtle Avenue. She said one of the vehicles was the Mustang described above. Other witnesses described the other racing vehicle as a red racing car, potentially a Chevy Camaro. The driver of the Mustang lost control when at a curve in the road.

A spokesperson for the police said that the Mustang driver was so traveling at such a high speed that he could not take the curve and therefore veered into a northbound lane. The driver of the SUV saw the Mustang coming at them and veered, which prevented a head-on collision, but the SUV was still struck. After the Mustang was cut in half, the back portion burst into flames right under a utility pole, which resulted in high-voltage wires on the ground.

The Driver of the Mustang Will Likely Face Felony Charges: But Is That Enough?

According to those familiar with the case, it is likely that the driver of the Mustang will face felony charges of reckless driving and street racing. Is that enough? Many people worry about not just this case but the future of street racing. Making it illegal may have reduced how common it is but it does still happen.

One thing the victim can do to help hold the at-fault party accountable is to work with an experienced personal injury attorney. Not only can they hold the Mustang driver accountable for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering, but considering how reckless the driver was, punitive damages may be awarded as well. These are damages included not just to provide compensation for the person who was injured but to punish the at-fault party.
