The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced an investigation into the Ford F-150, one of the most popular trucks in the country, after receiving 33 complaints of brake failure. These complaints tell of harrowing experiences where drivers report the brake pedal suddenly loses resistance and hits the floor, causing a complete loss of braking. Four of those incidents resulted in crashes. Mechanics have advised some drivers who experienced the problem that brake fluid leaked form the master cylinder to the brake booster.
An estimated 420,0000 vehicles are a part of the initial investigation. The vehicles are 2013 and 2014 model year Ford F-150 pickup trucks with 3.5 liter, six-cylinder engines. It is currently unknown if additional vehicles will become subject to the investigation; Ford has noted that other F-150 vehicles with different engines also use the affected braking system. Ford has indicated it will cooperate with NHTSA investigators.
