At least 13 crashes were reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) early Thursday, January 28th after thick fog rolled into Kings County in Central California. Most of the crashes occurred in a one hour stretch of very low visibility around 8-9 a.m.

At least three people were injured in the crashes. In one crash, a big rig made a left turn from Highway 198 to 6th Avenue near the city of Hanford, but was unable to see a Honda Accord in oncoming traffic. The big rig struck the passenger side of the Accord, causing moderate injuries to the driver. The driver was taken to nearby Adventist Medical Center.

Soon after, another big rig on Highway 198 was slowing down to avoid the previous crash when it was rear ended by a pickup truck. The pickup truck was driving too fast for conditions and was unable to avoid crashing into the big rig. Two people in the pickup were taken to Adventist Medical Center for their injuries.

CHP advises to avoid driving in the fog, but if you have to, drive slow enough to stop if there is a crash or obstruction ahead.
