A teenage couple was killed when a car on the eastbound 60 freeway failed to negotiate an offramp and literally flew into their pickup truck on the evening of Sunday, October 18th. The deceased teenagers were identified by friends as George Steward and Sabrina Castillo, both 18. The crash occurred at the 7th Avenue offramp in Hacienda Heights around 6:55 p.m.
According to authorities, a black sedan was driving extremely fast on the 60 East when it attempted to exit at 7th Avenue. The car missed a stop sign, hit a dip in the road, and then struck a concrete median and immediately went airborne. The car struck the top half of a white Toyota Tacoma, driven by Steward, completely removing the top half of the truck’s cab. The car eventually came to rest on its room across the street in a Denny’s parking lot.
Witnesses rushed to the aid of Steward and Castillo, but both victims were found unresponsive. They were later pronounced dead at the scene. Rescue workers extricated two people from the overturned black sedan, both of whom were treated for minor injuries.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash. Excessive speed is considered a factor, but authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved.
