Do You Know the Protocol for Driving in a Funeral Procession?

If your loved one died as the result of another person acting recklessly or negligently then we urge you to contact The Law Offices of Larry H. Parker at 800-333-0000 for a free legal consultation.

Funeral Processions Have the Right of Way

If you are driving and not part of the procession, know that the procession does have the right of way. You should yield to let it pass. This is true even if you have a green light and the procession has a red light. The best thing to do is to turn on your hazards, pull over if necessary, and respectfully wait for the procession to go by.

Do Not Interrupt a Funeral Procession

Even if you see a large gap and there is plenty of time to get through, you should never interrupt a funeral procession. The vehicles in the procession are instructed to drive as closely as is safe, but that does not mean that there will not sometimes be gaps. This is no excuse to cut off the procession or otherwise try to circumvent it.

Do Not Pass a Funeral Procession

You should never try to pass the funeral procession. Why? Because it could cause a car accident. Imagine how terrible it would feel to make a person already experiencing a tremendous loss have to witness a car accident. If you are on a highway with more than two lanes, and you can pass the procession on the left side, then you can pass. Otherwise, you should wait for the procession to go by.

Leave Plenty of Room After the Funeral Procession Has Passed

Once the procession has passed, give it a few moments before you start driving. Do not try to get in on the end of the procession to take advantage of their right of way. This is not disrespectful and illegal. Remember that waiting just one minute can help someone who has lost a loved one better deal with what is in front of them on one of the worst days of their lives.
