General Motors has expanded its recall for faulty ignition switches, recalling an additional 971,000 vehicles with newer model years. The expanded recall now includes the 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, Saturn Ion, Pontiac Solstice, and Saturn Sky, and the 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR. The number of vehicles now recalled for faulty ignition switches is estimated at 2.59 million.
In related news, it has come to light that GM discussed two possible fixes for faulty ignition switches in 2005, but failed to act on either of the fixes. GM has acknowledged that the faulty ignition switches, which can turn off the vehicle while in use, are linked to 13 deaths, but others think the vehicles could be linked to many more deaths. GM first discovered problems with the ignition switches in 2001.
