A biomass power plant in Northern California suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure, causing a boiler to explode, injuring two workers, one seriously, on Wednesday, May 29th. The seriously injured worker was airlifted to a Sacramento hospital with cuts and burns.

The accident occurred at the Buena Vista Biomass Power Plant. The plant is a recently converted coal-fired power plant is located in Ione, about 60 miles outside of Sacramento, and currently burns wood chips and other organic waste, providing 18-megawatts of electricity for the region.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the accident, but do not believe the incident was intentional.
