A 5-year-old girl remained in critical condition this morning after a school bus unexpectedly rolled backwards in Moreno Valley, crushing her on the afternoon of Monday, March 18th. The girl was pinned between the bus and a metal parking gate. She was hospitalized with a crushed pelvis, lacerated liver, and collapsed lung.

Around 2:30 p.m. at Box Spring Elementary School, children were just being let out of school. As children were preparing to board the bus in question, it began to roll backwards. Several students were in line for the bus and were able to get out of the way. The injured girl was the only child unable to move out of the way in time. A faculty member performed CPR on the girl. Two children were on the bus at the time of the accident. Authorities are not confirming if the driver was on the bus at the time.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
