A head-on collision in Moreno Valley late Sunday, August 18th killed two people and injured five more. Authorities suspect both drivers were under the influence. The crash occurred around 11:35 p.m. on Gilman Springs Road, southeast of Alessandro Road.

The crash happened when a 2003 Volkswagen Passat swerved into oncoming traffic, colliding with a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer. The driver of the Passat, Marco Bautista, 24 of Hemet, and his passenger, Makhara Op, 23 of Moreno Valley, were pronounced dead at the scene. Bautista was not wearing a seatbelt, though Op was.

The Trailblazer’s driver, Arturo Larios, 31 of Hemet, was arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence. Larios and his passengers, including three children, were taken to a local hospital for serious injuries.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash, including determining whether Bautista was under the influence at the time of the incident.
