A woman driving west on the 10 East east of Indio crashed into a van carrying eight people, killing the wrong-way driver and injuring three occupants in the van early Wednesday, October 29th. Police were notified about the crash around 4:23 a.m.

The incident remains under investigation. The wrong-way driver was driving west on Interstate 10 east in a 2004 BMW 330 sedan when he crashed head-on into a 2001 Ford Econoline van. The crash occurred near Indio and Coachella, east of Dillon Road. The van was carrying eight people, and one of the victims was trapped in the wreckage. The victim was freed by authorities before being taken to the hospital. Two other victims in the van were also taken to local hospitals with minor to moderate injuries. The driver of the BMW did not survive the crash.

It is unclear whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. It is also unclear how long the wrong-way driver was driving in the wrong direction. The CHP is still seeking information about the incident.
