Both drivers were killed when their vehicles collided head-on on the 15 South in Escondido during the early morning hours of Saturday, June 20th. One of the vehicles had been traveling the wrong-way at a high rate of speed. The victim struck and killed by the wrong-way driver has been identified as Barbara Lynn Astorga, 57.

According to authorities, a northbound Honda Civic, driven by a 51-year-old man from Santa Ana, entered the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 around 3 a.m. He drove at at high speeds for a few minutes before crashing into Astorga’s Mercedes SLK. The crash occurred around 3:05 a.m. near Gopher Canyon Road. Both vehicles were destroyed in the collision.

Astorga and the wrong-way driver were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
