A Rowland Heights woman was severely injured on Tuesday, March 12th, when her stopped sedan was rearended by an SUV on the 57 Freeway.

A Rowland Heights woman was severely injured on Tuesday, March 12th, when her stopped sedan was rear-ended by an SUV on the 57 Freeway. The crash occurred at 2:27 p.m. going southbound, just past Brea Canyon Cutoff Road. Kathryn Rios, 19, was transported to the University of California, Irvine Medical Center for her injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. According to authorities, Rios was driving a Toyota Corolla in the number 4 lane when she suddenly came to a stop. She was rear-ended by a Ford Explorer driven by La Habra resident Edward Castaneda, 38, who was cited after the accident on suspicion of driving on a suspended license and failing to provide proof of insurance. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.

Authorities are investigating why Rios came to a sudden stop. California Highway Patrol is requesting assistance from anyone who may have witnessed the crash. Witnesses should call the CHP at (626) 338-1164.
