Toyota Motor Corp. has settled with the family of four persons killed in August of 2009 when their Lexus vehicle sped out of control on a Southern California freeway. The settlement amount was announced publicly as $10 million. When the 911 call of the driver, off-duty California Highway Patrol Office Mark Saylor, became public, Toyota initiated the recall of millions of vehicles deemed at risk for sudden or unintended acceleration. Recalls of Toyota vehicles were issued for wrongly-sized floor mats, accelerator gas-pedals, a different set of accelerator gas-pedals and braking glitches in Prius hybrids.

Hundreds of lawsuits are still pending against Toyota for unintended acceleration in their vehicles.
