Manufactures voluntarily initiate many of these recalls, while others are ordered by The National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA).  The Jeep SUV that crushed “Star Trek” actor Anton Yelchin this past weekend had been flagged by the automaker because of a gear shift issue where the vehicle could unexpectedly roll away.

The actor, best known for his role in “Star Trek”, died tragically after his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee pinned him against the mailbox and security fence outside his home. The automaker issued a global recall of 1.1 million vehicles back in 2015, reporting that drivers had trouble telling whether or not they had put the automatic transmission in park. The particular vehicles set to be recalled are model-year 2012-2014 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans, as well as model-year 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. Fiat Chrysler said they will be conducting a thorough investigation of the accident that took Anton Yelchin’s life. Whether or not the recall was 100% associated with the actor’s death is still being determined, but the automaker has since replaced those gear shifts in their newer models.
