The Friedman Research Corporation, commissioned by The Center for Auto Safety, has released a new study showing that 303 people died as a result of airbag failure in the vehicles currently being recalled by General Motors for ignition switch problems. GM has recalled 1.6 million vehicles for the ignition switch problem.

The new research states that 303 crash victims in the front seat of the now recalled vehicles died in non-rear impact collisions where the airbag did not work properly. Airbags cannot work properly without electricity, something that could be blamed on faulty ignition switches, though GM is denying this possibility. The study looked at crash data from 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalts and 2003-2007 Saturn Ions.

General Motors first recalled the 2005-2007 Chevy Cobalt and 2007 Pontiac G5, then expanded the recall to include the 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR, 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice, and 2007 Saturn Sky.
