A woman standing on the sidewalk near an Irvine high school was killed after she was struck by a sedan in the late morning Wednesday, December 10th. The victim has been identified as Oanh Tran, 47, of Costa Mesa. The driver of the sedan, ejected from his vehicle, was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana in serious condition.
The cause of the crash is still unknown. It occurred just after 11 a.m. on Bryan Avenue near Patriot Way. A 27-year-old man was driving his Kia Rio in an unknown direction when he struck Tran, who was on the sidewalk. Tran was pronounced dead at the scene. After the collision, the Kia plowed through a fence at Beckman High School. The driver of the Kia was found 15-20 feet from his vehicle, which came to rest in an embankment.
Neither the driver nor Tran were affiliated with Beckman High School. Authorities believe that Tran was out for a walk or run at the time of the crash. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
