Bayer AG, the manufacturer of YAZ and Yasmin birth control pills, has agreed to pay over $110 million to settle about 500 lawsuits filed on behalf of patients who took their drugs and suffered blood clot injuries. Over 11,000 lawsuits against Bayer have been filed to date.

YAZ and Yasmin have been under investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after studies linked the popular birth control pills to an increased risk of blood clot. Studies have shown that women taking birth control containing drospirenone, such as YAZ and Yasmin, have a much greater risk of life-threatening blood clots than women who use other birth control medications. It has been reported that Bayer originally withheld information regarding this risk from the FDA. The FDA recently voted to update YAZ and Yasmin labeling to warn of the additional risk.
