Earlier this week, the National Traffic Highway Administration (NHTSA) released preliminary data showing a 7.7% increase in motor vehicle related traffic deaths for the year 2015.

While the NHTSA is actively analyzing data to determine what factors contributed to this spike in accident related deaths, the most significant increase came from pedestrians and bicyclists. {View the report}

As a response to the data, the NHTSA has put in place 6 safety summits where stakeholders will attempt to develop new tools that could improve driving behavior. Some of those challenges include drunk driving, distracted driving, and speeding. New initiatives that will attempt to protect pedestrians and cyclists, who are more susceptible to road related injuries or deaths, will also be discussed. When the final analysis is released, the Department of Transportation (DOT) and NHTSA will issue a call to action to safety partners. Ultimately, opening up a discussion to find more than one solution to improve driver safety and reduce the amount of traffic related deaths.
