Dogs can be our closest companions. They often live in our homes, have proven to decrease stress, and are regularly frequent playmates for children. But sometimes man’s best friend will bite, attack, or maul the innocent.

In Dayton, Ohio, the step grandmother of a 7-month old boy who was killed in a 2014 dog attack has been sentenced to three years in prison. Kimiko Hardy was found guilty on charges including involuntary manslaughter, endangering children and failure to restrain a vicious dog.

Initially, the coroner ruled the incident as an accident. However, due to prior incidents leading up to the merciless attack, investigators were able to determine that Hardy knew the dog was dangerous.

When a parent or legal guardian commits negligence by risking the health or life of a child, the results can be catastrophic. Especially when exposing a child to a violent or abusive animal. People who work and live around dogs should be aware of the risks and take precautions. Any dog can bite, but if you understand the risks for dog bites and know how to protect yourself, you will reduce the likelihood of getting injured.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a dog attack, we can help. The Law Offices of Larry H. Parker can help protect your legal rights by seeking immediate medical attention and pursuing legal action against the negligent party or the owner of the unrestrained animal.
