The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has some sobering accident statistics from the rain yesterday. It appears as though Southern Californians are rushing to prove the stereotype that we can’t drive in the rain.
During the rain on Thursday morning, 188 traffic accidents were reported between midnight and 8:00 AM on the freeways in Los Angeles county alone. These crashes included a jackknifed semi in Glendale and a closure of the 134 Freeway because of a fatal accident. The most reported type of accident were cars spinning out from driving too fast.
One CHP officer summed it up succinctly: “People are driving too fast for the roadway. Slow down. It’s really simple.” The officer also mentions that the “huge” number of accidents is normal for every rainy day in Los Angeles. In comparison, only 36 auto accidents were reported in the same time frame in the previous week. That’s 5 times as many accidents.
