A new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has concluded that fatal auto accidents involving teenaged drivers could be significantly reduced if more restrictions were placed on licenses. Some of these restrictions include postponing licensing until 17 years of age (13% decrease in fatal collisions), prohibiting driving at night (20% decrease), and not allowing other teenaged passengers (21% decrease).
Distracted driving appears to have a profound affect on younger drivers. Complete graduated licensing would significantly help reduce the number of car accidents and traffic fatalities. No states currently follow the IIHS recommendations for graduated licensing, though some states have adopted different rules. If all states followed the IIHS recommendations, it is estimated that 9,500 accidents would be prevented and 500 lives would be saved.
