The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall for 50 million roll-up and Roman style shades and blinds regardless of manufacturer due to strangulation and injury risks to young children. Since 2001, eight children have been reported killed with 16 children suffering near strangulation on the cords attached to shades and blinds. Approximately 5 million Roman shades and 3 million roll-up blinds are purchased from major retailers each year.

Over the past few years, recalls have been issued by the CPSC for numerous Roman blinds and shades. The CPSC is now considering strict child safety guidelines for window coverings as a response. Roman style shades and blinds can be purchased at many different retailers. For more information on the recall, or if you have Roman or roll-up shades or blinds in your home, contact the Window Covering Safety Council at (800) 506-4636 or visit their website at windowcoverings.org to obtain a free repair kit.
