According to authorities, the crash occurred when a driver traveling east drifted into oncoming traffic. The eastbound vehicle first sideswiped an oncoming pickup truck before crashing head-on into a different oncoming pickup truck. Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A third victim was airlifted to a local hospital, but died from sustained injuries. A surviving victim was taken to a local hospital with severe injuries.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash. They do not believe that speed was a factor, but the eastbound driver may have fallen asleep behind the wheel. Highway 46 was closed for several hours for investigation and clean up.
