A two-vehicle crash on a dangerous stretch of Pacific Coast highway north of La Jolla Canyon killed three early Tuesday, March 17th. At least ten other people have been killed in car crashes in the area since 2009. The incident occurred just after midnight south of Mugu Rock.

According to authorities, a man driving a black 1995 E320 Mercedes was speeding north on PCH when he lost control of his vehicle on a curve and entered oncoming traffic. The Mercedes broadsided a 2010 Honda Insight occupied by two men, aged 55 and 61, both from Irvine. The crash was so severe the Mercedes was split in half. The driver of the Mercedes was pronounced dead at the scene. The two Irvine men in the Honda were later pronounced dead by emergency responders.

Authorities were worried about other potential victims and searched the area for anyone else who may have been involved in the crash. The crash closed PCH between Las Posas Road and Yerba Buena Road for several hours while investigation and cleanup were underway.
