A sedan traveling west on eastbound Route 78 in Oceanside crashed into a pickup truck, seriously injuring both drivers in the early morning hours of Sunday, February 21st. The crash occurred west of College Boulevard around 3:15 a.m.

According to authorities, several calls came in reporting a dark colored sedan traveling the wrong way on Route 78. The driver, described by some news outlets as a woman near ‘retirement age’, eventually struck a pickup truck. The collision was violent, with debris strewn up to 400 feed from the site of the crash. Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles. Rescue workers were able to extricate both drivers after about 45 minutes, and both were taken by helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.

The wrong-way crash remains under investigation. Authorities are not certain why the woman was driving the wrong direction on the highway.
