There Are Three Types of Social Security Benefits: SSI, SSDI, and DWB
Under the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program, Social Security pays benefits to people unable to work due to a medical condition. This condition must be expected to last at least one year. Social Security will not pay benefits to people who have partial disability or a short-term disability.
Disabled Widow Benefits (DWB) is given to widows, widowers, or surviving divorced spouses whose marriage lasted 10 years or more, who have a disability. To be eligible for this program a person must be between the ages of 50 and 60 and the disability must have started before or within seven years of the worker’s death.
Do I Qualify For Social Security Disability Benefits?
There are several criteria you have to meet to qualify for Social Security disability benefits. These include:
- You worked at a job that is covered by Social Security.
- You must have worked recently and long to qualify.
- You must be unable to work your job or adjust to new work.
- Your disability must last or be expected to last for at least a year or be considered terminal.

Don’t Make a Mistake That Could Cost You Thousands
Of the roughly 2.5 million Social Security Disability benefit applications made every year, the vast majority will be rejected or delayed due to simple, preventable errors. For example, individuals often:
- Leave Out Medical Details
- Forget To Include A Complete Work History
- Make Errors In Financial Information
- Get Dates Wrong
- Use The Wrong Code Numbers Or ID Numbers
- Make Typos Or Other Errors That Make The Application Hard To Process
When you work with a skilled Social Security Disability attorney from our firm, you don’t have to worry about these kinds of errors costing you time and money. We will make sure your application is accurate and complete before submitting it, so you can get your benefits as quickly as possible. If your claim proceeds to a hearing, you will have an experienced attorney there to prepare you for the hearing and represent you in front of the Administrative Law Judge.
