Remicade, Enbrel, Cimzia, and Humira

Rheumatoid arthritis drugs Remicade, Enbrel, Humira, and Cimzia have been linked to a possibly fatal fungal infection.  The FDA has issued an order requiring a black box warning label for the risk of histoplasmosis.  Histoplasmosis, a fungal infection with flu-like sysmptoms, can spread beyond the respiratory system and attack other internal organs.  240 cases have been reported, with a fatality rate of around 20%.

Remicade, Enbrel, Humira, and Cimzia are all drugs classified as tumor necrosis factor alpha blockers designed to treat rheumatoid arthritis and other serious diseases.  Remicade (infliximab) is manufactured by Centocor (Johnson & Johnson).  Enbrel (etanercept) is manufactured by Amgen and Wyeth.  Humira (adalimumab) is manufactured by Abbott Laboratories.  Cimzia (certolizumab pegol) is manufactured by UCB.
