Trasylol / Aprotinin
Trasylol, a drug used to reduce blood loss during heart bypass surgery, has now been completely removed from the market. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993, the safety implications of Trasylol were unknown until 2006, when a New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) study linked the use of Trasylol (generically known as aprotinin) to an increased risk of kidney failure, heart attack, heart failure, stroke, and brain disorders. The increased risk of death was 54% when compared to similar drugs.
Further studies only confirmed the first NEJM study. In February of 2008, the NEJM published a new article indicating a 250% higher fatality rate when Trasylol was used during bypass surgery when compared to similar alternatives or no drugs at all. 1 in 6 patients receiving Trasylol died within one year of their surgery. A study commissioned by Bayer AG, Trasylol's manufacturer, only confirmed the earlier studies. Alarmingly, Bayer knew of this information as early as September 2006, but chose to withhold the results from the FDA.
Trasylol is the brand name for the drug aprotinin. Trasylol is manufactured and distributed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. The U.S. (FDA) approved Trasylol for preventative use to reduce blood loss and the need for blood transfusions in patients undergoing heart bypass surgery.
