Raptiva
The plaque psoriasis drug Raptiva (efalizumab) was recently issued a 'black box' warning from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the strongest warning possible. Raptiva has been associated with dangerous, opportunistic infections, including meningitis, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) - an exceedingly dangerous brain infection, and resulting deaths.
Raptiva is designed to limit the immune system with the goal of alleviating psoriasis. With a limited immune system, patients are subjected to an unnecessarily high risk of disease and infection. In February, the European Medicines Agency (the European Union's FDA equivalent) recommended the complete suspension of Raptiva sales, stating the benefits of the drug do not outweigh the risks.
